Perkins
Linking internal training to NVQs
skillspoint helped engineering firm Perkins to become an exemplary trainer in Business Improvement Techniques
Background
Perkins Engines Company Limited is a famous diesel engine firm with a history that stretches back over three-quarters of a century. With a head office in Peterborough, the firm also has a manufacturing facility in Stafford, a distribution centre in Manchester and offices in countries as diverse as Brazil, Japan, Germany, China and Singapore.
Perkins had an internal training system that implemented the Caterpillar Production System, based around Rapid Improvement Workshops (RIWs) and Value Stream Transformations (VSTs). skillspoint helped match this programme to the NVQ system.
How skillspoint helped
We first brokered partnerships between Perkins and education providers near its HQ and Staffordshire facility: Peterborough College and West Nottinghamshire College.
This enabled Perkins to work with each college to match its existing training programmes to the NVQ in Business Improvement Techniques.
How the solution worked
The training provided by Perkins is of a quality that is over and above what is required for the NVQ, and employees have been successful in achieving the qualification at Levels 2, 3 & 4. Perkins benefits from improved business practices, and staff receive career development through a nationally recognised qualification.
Future plans
Perkins is very happy with the development of the training programme, and all training for its Peterborough HQ continues to be channelled through skillspoint.
