NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) measure and recognise the contribution that individuals make in the workplace. Designed around the skills and knowledge people use in their jobs each day, NVQs measure all round competence.
NVQs are based on national occupational standards which are kept up to date by industries themselves, so you can be sure that NVQs incorporate the best possible working practices and that they are transferable and applicable cross-industry.
NVQs are awarded to people who have proven their skill, knowledge and understanding in all aspects of their job role. There are no tests or exams; instead, candidates (with the help of their assessor) collate evidence to indicate competency.
Evidence may come from a variety of sources. The combination of evidence required will vary depending on the NVQ, working environment and job role. It could include; testimonials, photographs, written questions and answers or short verbal explanations of work tasks (i.e. why something was done in a particular way and how successful it was). This is called professional discussion and may sometimes be recorded.
All NVQs have an academic equivalent ranging from 5 GCSEs grade D-E to post graduate degree level (e.g. Level 2 is equivalent to 5 GCSEs grade A-C).
Your assessor will meet with a candidate as many times as required to collate sufficient evidence, with a minimum of three visits. Evidence is collated in a master portfolio which is owned by the candidate once the NVQ is complete.
The amount of time taken to complete an NVQ will vary dependent on the level of qualification, the frequency of assessment and individual knowledge and commitment.
You may receive guided learning time to assist you if this had been agreed with your employer. Sessions can be delivered as workshops, one-to-one or as a training activity. This enables you to learn and develop extra skills, whilst also refreshing existing skills and knowledge.
When the portfolio is complete (all the evidence required to support the units has been collated), it is “Internally Verified” by another assessor, before being “Externally Verified” by the NVQ awarding body (e.g. City & Guilds).
The portfolio will then be returned to the candidate, along with their certificate.
